CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“Are you crazy? What are you doing here?

“I might be,” Laine entered the undercover office of the LAPD, going straight to his neglected desk. “And I’m going to find out exactly what’s up with Corie Rickman.”

“What if someone sees you?” Mark stood in front of Laine’s desk. “You’ll blow your cover.”

“I’ll take my chances.” The monitor screen blinked alive as Laine typed his password in and waited, at a painful level. Whoever came up with the notion that all Japanese were everlastingly patient had been strongly mistaken. They’d never waked a mile in a pair of geta. At long last, he reached the search page.

Mark continued to hover as Laine hit the keys to spell out Corie’s name. Again, Laine waited. The blood roaring in his ears didn’t diminish as the results lined the page.

Corie’s name came up in six places, all on one warrant. Why hadn’t Mark’s search found them? Had his backup really run her through the system or lied to him? He hoped he’d missed it because his computer clearance wasn’t as high as Laine’s was as a sergeant.

Laine read.

Mark broke Laine’s concentration. “Bro, you’re white as a sheet. What’s up?”

“Corie was beaten by her husband.” His words were muted.

“How do you know?”

“Daniel Rickman’s complaint was on behalf of Corie. It was against Ronald Reynaud for assault and battery. Reynaud put her in ICU for two weeks. She miscarried, so a murder warrant’s been issued. Where the hell is this guy?” He pounded his desk so hard the pens rattled and the monitor wobbled.

“What are we gonna do with this information?”

“I have no idea.” Laine’s stomach dropped to his feet. Corie, the woman of his heart, had been hurt both physically and emotionally. How could he heal her? Would she even let him?

“Well, I’ll talk to the homicide guys and see what they have. You need to get out of here before you get nailed.”

“You sure you’ll follow through?” Laine began to shut down the computer, but punched the print button first.

“What makes you think I won’t’?” Mark’s eyes widened and his bushy brows rose.

“You didn’t find much on your first look.” Laine gave him a hard stare while listening for the printer to finish.

“I misspelled her name. I spelled it with a K.”

Laine turned his gaze from Mark’s as the realization that he’d unjustly accused his friend sank in. “Sorry, bro. You did what you could with the knowledge I gave you.” He snatched the printout from the tray and stood. “I’m gone. I’ll check with you later.”

“Sure. No problem. But I’ll take that.” He lifted the paper out of Laine’s fingers. “You need to keep your focus. I was going to tell you at our briefing today, but four teenagers from Bel Air died over the last three days due to overdose on Ecstasy that we think they got at the ice rink in Beverly Center. And an assemblyman’s daughter is in ICU. That worsens the political climate, of course. The department’s getting more pressure to make an arrest.
